How To Install Quake 2 Xp Mod

  1. There's a mod called Brutal Quake for Q1 that was fairly promising before the dev seemingly stopped working on it. There was a lot of unwelcome gameplay changes but they could mostly be reverted via CFG (with more options to revert things in the future) and more importantly there was MOAR GIBS and they had physics and bits would stick to the ceiling.
  2. Add-ons, more commonly known as mods, usually come in a folder in a zip file. For instance, if you downloaded Prydon Gate, it will come in a folder called PRYDON. To install this addon, place it in your Quake directory, (so it is alongside the 'id1' folder). For instance, if your Quake directory is C: QUAKE, make it C: QUAKE PRYDON.
  3. Graphics Mod Quake2xp: https://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-2-xp.
  4. Inside your Quake 2 folder in the 'baseq2' folder, edit the file kmq2config.cfg and find the following lines: set rcustomheight 'xxxx' set rcustomwidth 'xxxx' Change these two lines (the xxxx) to define the resolution you wish to run at. For example, if you want to use 1920x1080, set rcustomheight to '1080' and rcustomwidth to '1920'.

Installation Guide

I've completely deleted Quake 2 folder in Steam. I reinstalled Quake 2, unzip only Q2xpBeta into Quake 2 folder, run it. Only models that aren't dated are the pistol and the grenade launcher. So, after that I tried to install the 'Remodel Quake Weapons'.

A few important points before we start:

  • CPMA is a free modification (mod) for the commercial game Quake III Arena.
  • CNQ3 is a free improved executable (engine) for running Quake III Arena on Windows and Linux. It is the official engine for CPMA. It is not necessary, but highly recommended when available for your platform.
  • This guide is for Windows Vista and later.
  • MacOS X users will want to look at the ioq3 engine to replace the original one.
  • Windows XP users should look at the quake3e engine.

Installing on the Steam version

Installation steps:

  • Buy and install Quake III Arena on Steam. You can safely ignore QUAKE III: Team Arena.
  • Locate the game's folder.
    • In Steam, go to the Game Library, right-click Quake III Arena and select Properties.
    • In the LOCAL FILES tab, click BROWSE LOCAL FILES...
  • Download and extract the following archives
FileDestination
cpma-mappack-full.zipbaseq3
latest cnq3root
latest cpmaroot
  • You can now run cnq3-x64.exe to launch CPMA.

Extra steps to launch CNQ3 instead of the original client from Steam:

  • Delete or move quake3.exe and testapp.exe.
  • Rename cnq3-x64.exe to quake3.exe.

Use cnq3-x86.exe instead of cnq3-x64.exe if you have a 32-bit Windows installation.

  • Run the original installer.
    • Make absolutely sure not to install in Program Files or Program Files (x86) as it will prevent the game from saving files to disk.
    • Opt not to install Punkbuster when prompted for this and any further installation.
  • Download the 1.32 point release patch from our download section.
  • Locate the game's folder.

  • If you don't have a file called q3key in your game's baseq3 directory:
    • Create an empty file called q3key in your baseq3 directory.
    • Edit the file to add your own CD key in it and save it.
    • It will look a bit like this: 0123456789ABCDEF (16 contiguous characters).
  • You can now run cnq3-x64.exe to launch CPMA.
Use cnq3-x86.exe instead of cnq3-x64.exe if you have a 32-bit Windows installation.

Quake 3 can also be bought on GOG if you don't want to be tied to Steam's DRM platform.

Configuring the game

Quake 2 Hd Mod

Once you have CPMA up and running, you will probably want to configure the game to your liking.
For this, please consult the following guides:

Modder ‘KirkBarnes’ has shared some new screenshots for his graphics overhaul mod for id Software’s classic shooter, Quake 2. These screenshots showcase Relief Mapping with self shadowing that will most probably be supported in the next version of quake2xp.

In case you weren’t aware of, quake2xp is graphics port of Quake 2 with a completely updated rendering that takes full advantage of the latest graphics cards to get the perfect picture, preserving the original style of the game.

This graphics overhaul mod supports real time per-pixel lighting and shadowing (like DooM3) with high quality parallax mapping, raw mouse input, cubemaps and caustic light filters, post-processing effects (like Bloom, Brightness/Contrast/Saturation, Motion Blur, SSAO, Scanline and mediam cinematic filter), reflection (screen space local reflection) and refraction surfaces, Oren-Nayar Diffuse with GGX Specular BRDF, Phong, Lambert and Sub-Surface Scattering lighting models, and features an advanced decal and particle system.

Those interested can download its latest beta version from here. We also suggest using the high-quality weapon models that modder ‘Turic’ released a while back.

Enjoy!
